LENZMAN Q&A

There are many kinds of music. Why have you decided to make dnb music?

Well, I guess that’s a matter of timing. I was into Hiphop in the early 90’s and used to make that as
well. When I got to my late teens, I discovered D&B (in 96) and got very into that. Hiphop was my
first musical passion, but D&B definately became the fiercest one. I just haven’t looked back really.
It’s so diverse and creative and has a great energy about it.

Who/What are your inspirations?

In terms of Drum & Bass it was labels like Good Looking, Full Cycle and of course Metalheadz
that got me into it. But my inspirations come from a lot of places. Musically I listen to all kinds of
stuff. Jazz, Blues, Soul, Funk, really. And also a lot of House and Techno and more recently Post
Dubstep or whatever they are calling it now! Just good music really.

About the collabs with Riya: do you create the tunes so there’s a gap to be filled up by Riya,
or do you just create a good tune, and then let Riya do her thing?

It’s a living thing really, writing a tune with a vocalist. I’ll have an idea for a track. Then she’ll
have an idea for a vocal. Then when I get the vocals back, I might get really inspired and change
things in the track, trying to improve it and fit better with the vocals, or I might ask her to change
something. Or that might happen in a reverse order. But it’s all just a bit of chemistry. Adding the
right ingredients together until you have a winning formula.

What other vocalists would you like to work with?

Anyone who’s got a bit of soul really. I’ve recently met a new vocalist here in Holland who I’m quite
excited about. We haven’t done anything together yet, but I can’t wait to get something going. Also
I would love to do a track with Ben Westbeech some day, I really love his vocals and songwriting
ability.

Are there plans for an album?

Yes, I’m currently in the very early stages of writing an album for Metalheadz.

What software you use for your productions?

Reason, Recycle, Adobe Audition and Ableton.

Do you have plans to make any non-dnb tunes?

I do write non-dnb tunes, but I really should more often.

How does it feel to be releasing on such big labels at such consistent rates? Is it hard to keep
up the pace?

Well it’s a blessing really. I consider myself to be very lucky to have done so! Sometimes I do feel
a certain pressure to deliver a certain level of quality and I do worry about this when I’m writing
music a bit too much sometimes. It can get in the way of being creative.

What are your favorite songs that you have made? Key releases?

Probably Open Page is the most well received one and it’s a track I’m very proud of. It’s a real song,
and – I’d like to think – a very honest one a that.
